Four Faculties Adapted for Persons with Disabilities

Four faculties – Faculty for Civil Engineering and Faculty for Law in Podgorica, Faculty of Philosophy in Nikšić and Faculty for Tourism and Hotel Management from Kotor, have been adapted for persons with disabilities through the activities of HERIC project worth 233,000 EUR. This was announced today by the Minister of Education, Damir Šehović, PhD, after paying a visit to the works completed at these faculties. The minister also spoke with the dean of Faculty of Law, Velimir Rakočević, PhD, and the dean of Faculty of Civil Engineering, Srđa Aleksić, PhD, and stated that at about 107 educational institutions in Montenegro the access have been adapted.

Of total contracted value, works worth over 113,000 EUR have been carried out on the Faculty of Philosophy in Nikšić. On the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Podgorica works worth over 54,000 EUR have been carried out. On the Faculty of Law in Podgorica, works worth nearly 39,000 EUR have been carried out, and at the Faculty of Tourism and Hotel Management in Kotor, works worth nearly 28,000 EUR have been carried out.

Minister Šehović particularly underlined that a lot of serious work must still be done to improve the situation in this area: “Access to facilities for people with disabilities should not be a matter of someone’s goodwill. The fact that these activities are complex and financially demanding does not discharge our obligation to act. To that effect, I do not consider the today’s visit as something that should be particularly praised, but as an event serving to send a message to the public that all of us must work much more and much better, to show that when we say ‘equal rights for all’ we truly mean it.”

Dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering in Podgorica, Srđa Aleksić, said: “The Ministry of Education has recognized us as a link that requires attention. This activity means a lot for the Faculty of Civil Engineering.”

Velimir Rakočević, dean of the Faculty of Law in Podgorica spoke about the significance of the project for this higher education institution, emphasizing that the faculty has almost the entire literature in electronic format, making it thus much more accessible, but also easier to use for people with disabilities.

The adaptation of these four faculties was done through the “Higher Education and Research for Innovation and Competitiveness” HERIC project, which is financed from the World Bank loan. The total value of the works is 233,000 EUR and the works are completed within the set deadlines.
